Israel: New Iron Beam missile defense system tested

The Israeli Ministry of Defense announced that the tests of a high-power laser system for missile defense were crowned with success.

In a series of tests, the system called “Iron Beam” intercepted unmanned aircraft, rockets and mortar shells, according to the same source.

“Today, for the first time, a high-power laser system built in Israel has succeeded in intercepting various targets, which is a world-class achievement,” said Israeli Defense Minister Benny Ganj.

Ganz recently agreed on a multimillion-dollar budget to develop the system.

The name of the new missile defense system fits perfectly with the so-called “Iron Dome”, the system that protects Israel from short- to medium-range missiles.

The tests are part of a multi-year program aimed at developing a powerful laser system that will frame the “Iron Dome”.

The program is led by state-owned defense technology company Rafael.

Rocket attacks against the Jewish state are frequent. Hamas from the Gaza Strip and pro-Iranian Hezbollah from neighboring Lebanon sometimes threaten Israel.
