For one more day thousands of people demonstrated in his cities Israel against the controversial reform of the Justice system promoted by the Prime Minister’s government Benjamin Netanyahu.
The reform sought by the coalition government of Mr Netanyahu’s Likud, far-right factions and ultra-Orthodox Jews – described as the most right-wing in the country’s history – has deeply divided the country and sparked Israel’s biggest protest movement to date.
Since the government’s controversial plan was announced in January, tens of thousands of people have been protesting every week across the country, from Haifa in the north to Eilat on the Red Sea, passing through Jerusalem.
The largest rally took place as usual in Tel Aviv, where thousands of demonstrators, draped in Israeli flags, chanted “Democracy” and slogans against the government which is persisting in trying to implement the plan despite strong resistance.
The government argues that the reform, intended to increase the power of the Knesset (parliament) over that of the judiciary, is necessary to ensure a better balance between powers. Its critics see it as a threat to democracy and fear it opens the way to authoritarian rule.
The first aspect of the reform was to limit the Supreme Court’s ability to overturn government decisions; the Knesset adopted it.
The process is currently on hold due to the summer vacation of the Israeli national delegation; Mr. Netanyahu has pledged that negotiations will take place on the next stages.
