A mortar attack on the closed Erez border crossing from Israel to Gaza was launched Sunday afternoon by Palestinian forces, according to Israel’s defense ministry, in the third day of fighting between Israeli forces and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group and some hour before the alleged start of the ceasefire between the two sides.
“The roof of the terminal was damaged as a result of the fire and debris fell at the entrance, an area used to facilitate the daily passage of thousands of Gazans working in Israel,” Israel’s Defense Ministry said, according to Reuters.
As reported by the Israeli agency, there were no reports of casualties.
And this while sources from Egypt and Palestine reported earlier that Israel and Palestinian fighters agreed to declare a truce in the Gaza Strip from tonight, Sunday, after a weekend of deadly Israeli shelling of Palestinian targets, and launching of rockets into Israeli territory from the Palestinian enclave.
According to a Palestinian official familiar with the Egyptian mediation effort, the ceasefire will take effect at 20.00 local time and Greek time.
Spokesmen for Israel and Islamic Jihad did not confirm the ceasefire agreement, saying only that they are in contact with Cairo.
