Israel: Police arrest 6 suspects after Khandera attack

Israeli police have arrested six suspects in the northern city of Umm al-Fahm following a deadly attack Sunday night in the Israeli coastal city of Khandera, according to the public network Kan.

The two suspects in the attack were Israeli Arabs from the city, and were cousins, Kan added in today’s radio bulletin.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described the two suspects in the attack as supporters of the Islamic State terrorist organization, which later claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack overshadows a summit between Israel and four Arab states, including the United States.

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco are meeting today in southern Israel with their Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid, as well as US President Anthony Blinken.

At the same time, the French embassy in Tel Aviv clarified today to AFP that one of the two police officers killed in last night’s attack had dual citizenship – French and Israeli.

“We can confirm the dual citizenship, Israeli and French, of Sirel Abukrat,” a young police officer, the embassy added.

“France’s ambassador to Israel, Eric Dunant, stands by his mourning parents and relatives,” the French embassy said in a Twitter message, noting that the 19-year-old had been born in Marseille. , in the south of France.

The other police officer killed in the attack last night was 19-year-old Ghazen Fallah. According to Kan, the four injured in the attack are members of the security forces.

Islamic State said in a statement that two of its fighters had carried out the attack.

Surveillance footage in Chandera, located between Tel Aviv and Haifa, shows two men opening fire with automatic weapons on a road lined with cars before heading to the sidewalk. “Two members of the counter-terrorism border police who were in a restaurant very close to the scene of the attack came out and neutralized the attackers,” an Israeli security source told AFP.

This is the second deadly attack by Islamic State supporters in Israel in a week, Bennett said.

On Tuesday, four people were killed, two men and two women, in another attack in the southern Israeli city of Birsheba. It was one of the most serious attacks in Israel in recent years.

In a statement, the Islamic State group described the attackers as members of both groups. The Palestinian movement Hamas in Gaza and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah in Lebanon praised the latest attack.

Israeli Defense Minister Benny Ganj announced the strengthening of security forces after yesterday’s attack. The police will set up barricades today, while the army instructed the strengthening of the soldiers in the occupied West Bank.
