Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon told reporters on Tuesday (24) that Israel prefers a “diplomatic solution” in Lebanon to deal with the Hezbollah group, but would use “other methods” to show “that we are serious”.
Asked by Tara John of CNN whether Israel is prepared for a second front on its border with Lebanon after repeatedly striking Hezbollah targets in the country, Danon said: “We are not eager to start any ground invasion anywhere. I do not want to send my son, and we do not want to send our boys to fight in a foreign country, but we are determined to protect the civilians of Israel.”
Speaking to reporters at the UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, Danon continued to say that Israel prefers a diplomatic solution – but added: “If it’s not working, we are using other methods to show the other side that we mean business.”
Danon said the only way the conflict will end will be “when Hezbollah is not on our border.”
The Israeli envoy also hit back at criticism from other nations of Israel’s wartime conduct, telling reporters that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s comparison of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler was “beyond imagination” and “shameful.”
In an earlier speech, the Turkish president said: “Israel’s move has shown once again that it is essential for the international community to develop a protection mechanism for Palestinian civilians. Just as Hitler was stopped by the alliance of humanity 70 years ago, Netanyahu and his network of murders must be stopped by the ‘alliance of humanity’.”‘”.
