Israel: Prime Minister Bennett’s daughter attacked by Covid-19

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett tested negative for Covid-19 after his 14-year-old daughter was infected with the new coronavirus, his office said.

Bennett resigned from the cabinet and returned home to be isolated after learning that his daughter had tested positive in the midst of an increase in cases in Israel due to the Omicron variant. He later underwent a PCR test, which he found negative, but decided to remain in isolation for precautionary reasons.

The Israeli prime minister made the commemorative dose of the vaccine on August 20. His daughter is also vaccinated. His office did not disclose whether the 14-year-old was infected with the Omicron variant or the Delta, which is also widely available in Israel.

Bennett had been criticized for taking his wife and children on holiday abroad earlier this month, although he had called on Israelis to cancel any plans to travel abroad to help stem the spread of Omicron. The government later approved measures banning Israelis from traveling to most countries. It was preceded by a ban on foreigners entering Israel.

Health authorities have reported 1,118 confirmed cases of Omicron, and the number of people infected with the variant doubles every two days.
