Israel promises “surprising” retaliation for Iran attack

The Israeli military said it will choose when to “prove our precise and surprising strike capabilities” after the Iran attack, adding that Israel has proven its ability to “prevent the enemy from achieving anything.”

The military also continues to fight Iran’s allies in the region. Israel on Wednesday deployed regular infantry and armored units for ground operations in southern Lebanon, but said the operation would remain limited and localized in scope.

Israel said on Tuesday that commando units and paratroopers crossed a short distance over the border in the first publicly announced ground operation in Lebanon.

It later said that special forces units had been carrying out ground attacks against Hezbollah targets on the border for months, during which they discovered tunnels and weapons caches under houses.

The addition of infantry and armored troops from the 36th Division, including the Golani Brigade, the 188th Armored Brigade and the 6th Infantry Brigade, suggests that the operation went beyond limited commando attacks.

The military said the ground operation is primarily aimed at destroying tunnels and other infrastructure on the border and that there are no plans for a broader operation targeting Beirut or major cities in southern Lebanon.
