The Israeli military claimed that a failed projectile launched from inside Gaza was responsible for the bombing of al-Shifa hospital, the largest in the Palestinian region, this Friday (10).
“Earlier today, the IDF [Forças de Defesa de Israel] received reports of an attack on al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The Hamas-run media office in the Gaza Strip immediately claimed that this was an attack carried out by the IDF,” IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hecht said in a statement sent to CNN .
The IDF said an examination of its operational systems indicated that “a failed projectile launched by terrorist organizations inside the Gaza Strip hit al-Shifa Hospital.”
Hecht went on to state that the projectile was aimed at “IDF troops operating nearby.”
Several videos on social media emerged this Friday showing injured people lying on the floor of the clinic after the bombing.
The director general of the Hamas-run Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, Medhat Abbas, told CNN that the videos showed “the waiting room covered in metal sheets under which the inmates tried to protect themselves”.
A spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO) also said on Friday that al-Shifa hospital was “under bombardment”.
Shortly before 12:30 p.m. ET, United Nations (UN) aid chief Martin Griffiths condemned what he called a “horrific” attack carried out on al-Shifa hospital.
“Horrible reports of attacks on al-Shifa hospital from Gaza today,” Griffiths said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. In her publication, she also highlighted how “the lives of thousands of patients, staff and civilians are at risk” after the attack.
