The agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages should begin as originally scheduled on Sunday (19), declared the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after hours of uncertainty over the timing of the agreement’s final approval by the cabinet.
“Pending approval by the Security Cabinet and the Government, and the agreement coming into force, the release of the hostages will be implemented according to the planned framework in which the hostages are expected to be released on Sunday,” a statement said.
A meeting with the 11 members of the Israeli Security Cabinet is underway this Friday (17).
This Friday’s meeting (17) comes before a broader cabinet vote to approve the agreement, expected for Saturday (18).
Eight of the 11 members are from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, two far-right coalition partners in the security cabinet, openly opposed the deal.
