The Israeli military said it captured a senior Hezbollah operative in an amphibious special forces raid in northern Lebanon.
Members of the elite Shayetet 13 force captured the suspected agent of the Lebanese group after landing on the coast of Batroun, a city in northern Lebanon, and took him back to Israeli territory, an Israeli military official told reporters. CNN.
The source added that the captured agent was now being investigated by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intelligence Unit 504.
Shayetet 13, which operates from the Atlit naval base on Israel’s northern Mediterranean coast, is sometimes compared to the United States Navy SEALS, one of the world’s most highly regarded special forces.
The Israeli Army previously described Shayetet 13’s role in CNN as carrying out “strategic sabotage activities behind enemy lines, including damaging vital wartime structures and enemy seaports.”
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported this Saturday (2) that witnesses saw “an unidentified military force carrying out a landing operation on Batroun beach” at dawn the previous day.
The troops “moved with all their weapons and equipment to a chalet near the beach, where they kidnapped citizen Imad Amhaz and took him to the beach, and then]left in speedboats into the open sea,” the NNA reported.
The Lebanese government highlighted that its security services were investigating “an incident that occurred in the Batroun area” at dawn on Friday.
Hezbollah released a statement referring to an incident of “Zionist aggression in the Batroun area” but did not provide further details. THE CNN contacted the Lebanese group and is awaiting feedback.
The Israeli military officer told CNN that the country’s forces “will continue to act wherever necessary to protect the state of Israel and its citizens.”
The attack comes a little more than a month after Hezbollah said it was targeting a naval base on Israel’s northern Mediterranean coast that houses an elite Israeli naval commando unit — believed to be a reference to Shayetet 13.
Hezbollah claims the attack took place on September 23. Asked at the time about the comment, the IDF noted that “no injuries were reported” — but did not confirm that the naval base had been the target.
Understand the escalation in conflicts in the Middle East
Iran’s missile attack on Israel on October 1 marked a new stage in the regional conflict in the Middle East. On one side of the war is Israel, with support from the United States. On the other, the Axis of Resistance, which receives financial and military support from Iran and which has a series of paramilitary groups.
There are seven conflict fronts currently open: the Islamic Republic of Iran; Hamas, in the Gaza Strip; Hezbollah, in Lebanon; the Syrian government and the militias operating in the country; the Houthis, in Yemen; Shia groups in Iraq; and different militant organizations in the West Bank.
Israel has soldiers on three of these fronts: Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. In the other four, it carries out aerial bombings.
The Israeli Army began a “limited ground operation” in Lebanon on September 30, days after Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a bombing of the group’s headquarters in the Beirut suburb.
The Israel Defense Forces claim they killed virtually the entire Hezbollah chain of command in similar bombings carried out in recent weeks. On September 23, Lebanon had its deadliest day since the 2006 war, with more than 500 fatalities .
At least two Brazilian teenagers died in the attacks. Itamaraty condemned the situation and called for an end to hostilities.
With the increase in hostilities, the Brazilian government announced an operation to repatriate Brazilians in Lebanon.
In the West Bank, the Israeli military is trying to dismantle groups opposed to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory. In the Gaza Strip, Israel is seeking to eradicate Hamas, responsible for the October 7 attack that left more than 1,200 people dead, according to information from the Israeli government. The Israeli operation killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, according to the enclave’s Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas.
Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed by the Israeli Army on October 16, in the city of Rafah.
