The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it struck a “Hamas war room” inside a school operated by the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza this morning. Tuesday (14).
The Israeli army claims that the room was being used by Hamas commanders and that more than 10 members of the group were killed in the attack. A CNN cannot independently confirm Israel's claim.
A UNRWA official said the agency was unable to confirm information provided by the Israeli military.
“As we have said on several occasions, any report of a violation of UN facilities must be investigated. We remind all parties to the conflict that UN facilities must be protected at all times. They should never be used for military and combat purposes,” Juliette Touma, director of communications at UNRWA, told CNN in a statement.
Al Awda hospital in Gaza said it had received 11 bodies from the attack.
“Israel carried out a precision strike against central Hamas war room commanders embedded in a UNRWA school in the Nuseirat area,” the army said.
“The war room was used by terrorist agents from the military wing of Hamas. The attack was carried out with precise ammunition to minimize damage to uninvolved civilians”, he added.
The Israel Forces further stated that the war room had been used by Hamas to “plan multiple attacks” against Israeli troops in central Gaza in recent weeks.
The military also confirmed an attack on a second location in Nuseirat this Tuesday (14), claiming that they hit “terrorist infrastructure”.
Gaza's Al Aqsa hospital said it had received bodies of 36 people, including 18 children, from this attack.
Rescue teams search for victims under the rubble of a four-story building that was demolished during the raid, witnesses said. Dozens of people were sheltering in the building's courtyard.
The attack on the UNRWA school occurred about two hours after the military action on the four-story building, according to witnesses.
