Israel “has committed to reopening” the Kerem Shalom crossing on Wednesday (8), US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Tuesday (7).
“We are working to ensure that this actually happens so that humanitarian assistance can continue,” Miller said at a State Department news conference, noting that the crossing was closed because it was bombed by Hamas.
Miller also said that Israel has informed the United States that Rafah “will be reopened for the delivery of fuel,” which he said “is critically important for water desalination” and for transporting aid throughout the Gaza Strip.
“If Kerem Shalom opens and Rafah reopens, these will be important steps because we do not want to see humanitarian assistance limited or impeded in any way,” he said.
Israel closed the Kerem Shalom crossing last week after it was hit by at least 10 rockets, killing three Israeli soldiers, in an attack claimed by Hamas.
The head of the main United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said Tuesday that the crossings must be opened “without any delay.”
