Israel says Putin apologized for Lavrov comments involving Hitler

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had apologized for comments by his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, alleging that Adolf Hitler had Jewish origins.

Bennett, after a call with the Russian leader, said he accepted the apology and thanked Putin for clarifying his position.

Bennett also said he had asked Putin to consider allowing the evacuation of the beleaguered Azovstal steelworks in the Ukrainian port of Mariupol.

Bennett said he made that request after an earlier conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and that Putin had promised to create a corridor for the evacuation of civilians.

On Monday, Israel denounced Sergei Lavrov for suggesting that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler had Jewish roots in an interview with Italian television.

“It is an unforgivable and scandalous statement, a terrible historic mistake, and we expect an apology,” Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid told news website YNet.
