Israel says use of US-supplied weapons is in accordance with international law

Israel sent a letter guaranteeing that its use of US-supplied weapons complies with international humanitarian law, a US official told Reuters. CNN on Thursday (21).

The written assurance is required under the terms of a new national security memorandum that was issued in February. All nations receiving U.S. military aid are required to provide such assurances, and the U.S. must assess whether they are “credible and trustworthy.”

Israel has been accused of violating international humanitarian law in its war against Hamas in Gaza, which has killed more than 30,000 people and displaced more than a million.

US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said Wednesday that he would not “talk about the specifics of any single country at this time.”

“This is a broad memo that touches many different corners of the world. And to take a step back, since the signing of the national security memorandum on February 8, partner countries considered to be in active armed conflict have had 45 days to share letters of assurance,” Patel said at a department briefing. “And upon receipt of each of them, the United States will evaluate … whether these assurances are credible and trustworthy.”

“That work is ongoing, and implementation of this national security memorandum is ongoing, as is the assessment of these assurances from partner countries,” he said.
