Heavy explosions occurred early Thursday in Latakia, Syria, during an Israeli airstrike, according to the Syrian news agency SANA. The country’s air defense was mobilized to intercept enemy targets in the skies over Latakia, SANA reports. So far there is no information about casualties. Israel has stepped up its strikes in Syria alongside the escalation of its military operations in Lebanon, where it has been pounding pro-Iranian Hezbollah strongholds for three weeks. Since Syria’s civil war broke out 13 years ago, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes in its neighboring country, usually targeting Iranian-backed forces and Syrian army positions.
