Israel’s Armed Forces summoned reservists to prepare for a possible resumption of combat in the Gaza Strip if Hamas does not meet this Saturday’s deadline to release more Israeli hostages.
Under a ceasefire agreement, in force since January 19, the armed group agreed to release three more hostages on Saturday. However, he said this week that he suspended liberation because of what he classified as violations of the terms of understanding by Israel.
United States President Donald Trump replied by saying that all hostages should be released until noon on Saturday or he would “let hell explode.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Tuesday that Israel will resume “intense fighting” if Hamas does not meet the deadline, but did not say how many hostages should be released.
The prime minister ordered the military to gather forces in Gaza and around, and the military announced shortly after they were sending additional forces to the south of Israel, including reservist mobilization.
The impasse threatens rekindling a conflict that devastated the Gaza strip, traveled internally most of its population, and caused food, running water and shelter, as well as bringing the middle east to the edge of a broader regional war.
Israeli authorities commented that the government ministers supported Trump’s threat to “cancel” the ceasefire unless all remaining hostages are released on Saturday.
Hamas said it is still committed to the agreement, but did not agree to release the detainees.
A Palestinian authority near the negotiations stated that mediators intensified intervention “to prevent things from becoming a real crisis.”
Required to comment on the current situation, another representative of Hamas spoke to Reuters, without giving details: “Contacts are underway.”
The Gaza War was triggered by the attack led by Hamas south of Israel on October 7, 2023, in which at least 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were taken hostage to Gaza, according to Israeli records.
In response, Israel began a military offensive against Hamas that devastated Palestinian territory and killed more than 48,000 people, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
