Thousands of its citizens Israel took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday night, protesting for the eighth week in a row against Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial reform of the judicial system, which they see as an attack on democracy.
Yesterday’s demonstration took place after the adoption by the Parliament, in the first reading, on Tuesday, of two main provisions of the reform.
The first provision modifies the procedure for appointing members of parliament and the second makes the courts incompetent to judge acts or decisions that they may consider to be in conflict with the fundamental laws, which have the role of a Constitution. Another highly controversial provision of the reform is that which allows parliament to overturn Supreme Court decisions by a simple majority.
“Democracy, democracy!” the “We will not give up”chanted the protesters in central Tel Aviv.
“We are fighting for our country, for democracy, for equal rights”Ronit Peled, from Hod Hasharon, north of the Israeli metropolis, told AFP. “Somebody has to stop the government”which has been set “to control our lives. We are afraid that we will become a fascist country”said the 68-year-old pensioner.

The reform plan was announced in early January by the government formed in December by Benjamin Netanyahu with far-right parties and ultra-Orthodox Jewish formations.
According to its critics, the bill, as it aims to reduce the influence of the judiciary in favor of politics, threatens the democratic character of the state of Israel.
