Turkey and Israel have begun working to restore mutual diplomatic representation at the ambassadorial level, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said today as the two countries seek to end a decade of strained relations.
Israel and Turkey mutually expelled each other’s ambassadors in 2018 and often exchanged fire on the occasion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Energy is emerging today as a potential area of cooperation between them.
Tsavousoglu made the remarks during a meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Yair Lapid, who is visiting Ankara today, amid recent concerns expressed by Israel that its citizens could be targeted by Iranian agents in Turkey.
Tsavousoglu said he was in close contact with Lapid on the issue. For his part, the Israeli minister thanked Turkey for helping to prevent an Iranian plan against Israelis in Istanbul. He even added that this effort continues.
Israel has issued a travel directive warning its citizens not to travel to Turkey because of the risk of being killed or abducted by Iranians.
Tehran has vowed to avenge the assassination of a Revolutionary Guards colonel blamed on Israel’s secret services.
