Israel: Two killed and many injured in Tel Aviv shooting incident

LAST UPDATE: 23.45

Two people were killed and many more were injured tonight in the center of Tel Aviv by the armed attack, which caused scenes of chaos in the “heart” of the Israeli big city.

The Red Star of David – the corresponding Red Cross in Israel – announced that at least 16 people were hospitalized. “We have received 10 injuries so far, but despite the efforts of doctors, two of them succumbed to their injuries,” the Ishilov Hospital in Tel Aviv said.

Eyewitnesses told the French News Agency (AFP) that they heard gunshots and saw scenes of chaos on Dizengov Street, where there are many bars and restaurants.

“It’s a scene of war, with soldiers and police everywhere. They searched the restaurant, people were crying and running in all directions,” Benjamin Bloom, who works at a restaurant a few meters from the site of the attack, told AFP.

Brenda Ehrlich, 31, an insurer from Holon, was on a bus bound for Tel Aviv when she heard about the attack. “I feel that I have to be constantly vigilant and that I have to look in all directions so that someone armed does not surprise me,” he told AFP.

Appeal of the authorities to the residents

The Israeli security forces asked the residents not to leave their homes until the operation to locate the perpetrator is completed, in order not to risk fire.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett went to the army headquarters in Tel Aviv, where he is constantly informed about the latest developments after the fourth attack in two weeks in Israel.

Last week, a Palestinian from the occupied West Bank opened fire on passers-by in the Bnei Brak suburb of Tel Aviv, killing five people.

A few days earlier, two police officers had been killed in an armed attack in Chandera (north).

On March 22, in Bersheva – a large city in the Negev desert (south) – four Israelis were killed in an attack by a teacher, who was sentenced in 2016 to 4 years in prison for planning to travel to Syria to fight in side of the Islamic State jihadists.

Following these attacks, the Israeli authorities arrested dozens of people suspected of having ties with the Islamic State, while intensifying operations in the occupied West Bank and especially in Jenin, where the perpetrator of the attack in Bnei Brak came from.

At least three members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were killed last week in an exchange of fire during an Israeli army operation in Jenin.

Tonight’s attack came as Israeli authorities prepared to sound the alarm in view of the first major prayer on Friday before the start of Ramadan.
