Two officers of the Israeli Army Special Forces were killed by “friendly fire” outside their camp in the Jordan Valley, in the occupied West Bank, in the early hours of today, the staff announced.
The officers were patrolling or exercising outside their base when they were “misidentified” and “killed by Israeli gunfire” from a soldier he thought were Palestinians trying to attack him, he said.
“Unprecedented pain this morning after the news of the death of two officers of the Egoz unit” (also known as Unit 621, specializing in unorthodox warfare), said Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gandz in a statement and added that the armed forces will “conduct an in-depth investigation” into this accident.
Expressing his condolences “on behalf of all the people of Israel”, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett promised that “the lessons learned” would be learned from the incident.
According to the first information of the Israeli media, officers came out of their booth and headed to a training area around 23:00, possibly for patrol or exercise.
They spotted someone they suspected and shot in the air. Then, a soldier of the unit, who was patrolling around the camp, shot in the direction of the officers, believing that they had shot at him, and killed them.
Last week, two Navy pilots were killed when a damaged helicopter crashed into the sea off Haifa.
