Israel wants to more than double its solar power by 2025, as the government seeks to generate 30 percent of the country’s energy needs from renewable sources – and 70 percent from natural gas – by the end of the decade, according to Bloomberg.
The installed capacity of renewable energy sources will increase from 3.7 megawatts last year to 7.4 megawatts by the middle of the decade, according to plans announced by the electricity authority and the Israeli Ministry of Energy on Sunday. The vast majority of the increase will come from solar panels.
The government of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has pledged to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 ahead of the COP26 summit in Glasgow last year.
While increased gas consumption in Israel in recent years has allowed it to become dependent on coal, it lags behind in terms of renewable energy sources. In 2021, less than 10% of the country’s needs were met by renewable energy sources, according to the Ministry of Energy.
The new plan also includes proposals to strengthen storage capacity.
