The United States is ready to vote on a United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution on the Israel War after several delays, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said on Thursday night. (21).
“I just want to share that we have worked hard and diligently over the past week with the UAE [Árabes Unidos], with other countries, with Egypt, to reach a resolution that we can support. And we have that resolution now. We are ready to vote,” Thomas-Greenfield told reporters.
The diplomat made the statement after a closed-door meeting in which the Security Council decided to postpone again the vote on the resolution that calls for the suspension of fighting between Israel and Hamas and greater sending of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Now, the vote on the text is scheduled to take place this Friday (22).
Thomas-Greenfield did not share how she will vote, but said “it will be a resolution, if presented as is, that we can support.”
The text will address humanitarian assistance and support “Egypt’s priority in ensuring that we put a mechanism on the ground that will support humanitarian assistance,” added the ambassador.
The United States has already voted against in the UN General Assembly a call for a ceasefire in the war in Israel and, earlier this month, vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that included the word “ceasefire” in the text.
The American deputy ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, pointed out to the Security Council that the veto was due to the fact that there was no mention of the October 7th Hamas attacks in the project.
As the US is one of the five permanent members of the Council, a resolution vetoed by the country will not be approved.
