The Israeli military confirmed that it killed in an airstrike today in Beirut the top commander of Hezbollah, Ibrahim Akil, as well as other commanders of the al-Radwan force, an elite unit of the pro-Iranian Lebanese movement. The Radwan Force is Hezbollah’s special unit, primarily tasked with infiltrating Israeli territory and capturing civilian communities in the Galilee region. In addition, the Radwan Force conducts reconnaissance and intelligence operations against Israeli targets using UAVs. Eight people were killed and 59 wounded in this Israeli raid in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon’s health ministry said. Ibrahim Akil, also known as Tahsin, was wanted by the US for his role in the attacks on the US embassy in Beirut in April 1983, in which 63 people were killed, and his role in attacks on US marines in October 1983, where 241 soldiers were killed.
