Israel’s ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Zonshine, declared in an interview with CNN Brazil that his country will only accept a possible ceasefire if Hezbollah withdraws its troops from Lebanese territory close to the Israeli border.
Zonshine emphasized the need to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which mandates the withdrawal of Hezbollah to 20 km north of the Litani River, in Lebanon. “So that Hezbollah will accept, not only accept, but will withdraw their forces north of the Litânia River, things will calm down and we can reach a ceasefire in that sense”, stated the ambassador.
Threat of invasion and border tensions
The Israeli diplomat warned about the threat posed by Hezbollah, revealing that the group “prepared at least six barrels to enter and invade Israel, in the same way that happened on October 7th by Hamas, in the Gaza strip”. Zonshine stressed that the group’s intention was not peaceful, but rather to ‘kill Israelis’.
The ambassador’s statement comes at a time of increasing tension on the border between Israel and Lebanon, with exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. The ceasefire proposal, presented by France and the United States, has met with resistance from Israeli ministers.
Zonshine reiterated that the effective implementation of Resolution 1701, which dates back to 2006, is essential to calm the situation. “So, so that we will see a real intention and actions from Hezbollah to comply with this resolution, I think things will calm down a lot of what happens now”, concluded the ambassador.
