Israel will “temporarily” allow humanitarian aid deliveries to the besieged Gaza Strip, where the population is at risk of starvation, through the port of Ashdod and the Eretz crossing, according to a press release issued today by the offices of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The wartime government approved “taking immediate measures to increase humanitarian aid” in order to “avoid a humanitarian crisis” and “ensure the continuation” of Israeli military operations in the Palestinian enclave, Prime Minister Netanyahu's office said in a statement released hours after his conversation with US President Joe Biden. Earlier in Washington, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, when asked about a report by the news site Axios that the Israeli government had approved the opening of Eretz to increase the amount of aid delivered by land routes, commented that if true, this is welcome news.
