Israeli Ambassador to Nuland: Countries in the region will decide on EastMed

“I have great respect for Undersecretary of State Nuland, but the countries of the region are the ones who have to make the decision. And the countries of the region are discussing,” said Israeli Ambassador to Greece Yossi Amrani, commenting on remarks by US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland in “Kathimerini” for EastMed.

Speaking at the 7th Delphi Economic Forum, the Israeli ambassador said: “Let us look at our own interests, let us realize what assets we have as countries and as a region and let us try to use them for a specific political, economic, strategic benefit.”

He emphasized the need to make progress, but said that “for 12-13 years we have been talking about EastMed until the Americans told us it was going nowhere. I do not think any of us were surprised, but if this is not a surprise, let us think other alternatives “.

“It’s time to make some progress,” he said, stressing that “if Europe is to be honest about its rhetoric about the need to diversify its gas supplies, then Brussels’s rhetoric must be translated into action.”

In this context, he referred to the important role that Egypt plays in the field of energy, noting that this country is a partner, a key player. He even referred to the recent summit of Israel, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates in Sharm el-Sheikh, where these issues were discussed at length, noting that energy is not limited to tripartite cooperation or the 3 + 1 initiative, with the participation of the United States. , “but there are specific regional dimensions to this”.
