Israeli army chief resigns after admitting blame in Hamas attack

The head of the army Israeli, Herzi Halevisaid on Tuesday (21) that he would resign on March 6, taking responsibility for the massive security failure on October 7, 2023, when Palestinian Hamas gunmen from Gaza carried out a cross-border attack on Israel.

Halevi, in a letter to Israel’s defense minister, was widely expected to resign. He said he would complete investigations of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on October 7 and strengthen the forces’ readiness for security challenges.

“I will transfer command of the IDF in a complete and high-quality manner to my successor,” wrote Halevi, Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Armed Forces.

Israel says Hamas killed about 1,200 people in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that triggered the war. Gaza’s Health Ministry says more than 47,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict.

In July, the Israeli military acknowledged that it had failed to protect citizens in one of the hardest-hit communities, kibbutz Be’eri.
