Israeli attacks in Gaza leave at least 20 dead

Israeli attacks killed at least 20 Palestinians in Gaza on Wednesday (19), local health agents said, while the Israeli army resumed their bombing and issued new orders for residents to leave combat zones.

A foreigner was killed and four others were injured in an Israeli air strike at the United Nations headquarters in Gaza City Center on Wednesday (19), the Gaza Ministry of Health said.

The Israeli army denied in a statement that had reached the UN complex in Deir al-Balah. He said he had hit a Hamas site in northern Gaza, where he had detected preparations to fire against Israeli territory.

Israeli air strikes killed more than 400 people on Tuesday (18), according to Palestinian health officials, in one of the largest deaths in a single day since the conflict began, ending weeks of relative calm since the ceasefire in January.

Israel warned that the attack was “just the beginning.”

Israel and Hamas accuse each other to violate the truce, which offered a relief to the 2.3 million residents of Gaza after 17 months of war. The conflict reduced the enclave to rubble and forced most of its population to move several times.

Israel accused Hamas of wearing Palestinian civilians as human shields. The Palestinian Islamic group denies the accusations and accuses Israel of indiscriminate bombing.

In the violence on Wednesday (19), three people were killed in an Israeli air strike to a house in the city of Gaza, while another air strike left two men dead and wounded six others in the city of Beit Hanoun in the north, Gaza health officials said.

Palestinian doctors said the bombing of Israeli tanks on Salahdeen road killed a Palestinian and injured others, while an Israeli air strike killed three people in a house in the city of Beit Lahiya north of the Enclave.

Armed men led by Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and doing about 250 hostages, according to Israeli counts, destroying Israel’s reputation as invincible in a hostile region in the worst security disaster in the country.

The subsequent Israeli campaign in Gaza killed more than 49,000 people, say Palestinian health officials, and caused a humanitarian crisis with food, fuel and water shortage.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to resume the bombings triggered protests in Israel, where 59 hostages are still detained, and 24 of them are still believed to be alive.

A coalition of hostage families and protesters against Netanyahu’s actions against the judiciary and other parts of the security system has registered and accuses the prime minister to use the war for political purposes.

On Wednesday (19), the Israeli army launched leaflets in the north and southern Gaza Strip, ordering residents to leave their homes, warning that they were in “dangerous combat zones.”

“Staying in the shelters or current tents puts your life and that of your family in danger.

Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he ordered attacks because Hamas rejected proposals to ensure an extension of ceasefire until April.

Hamas accused Israel of compromising mediators’ efforts to negotiate a permanent agreement to end conflicts.

European Union’s head of foreign policy, Kaja Kallas, said on Wednesday that he told Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar that the situation in Gaza is “unacceptable.”

King Abdullah of Jordan asked the ceasefire to be restored and that the flow of help would resume.

“The resumption of Israel’s attacks on Gaza is an extremely dangerous step that adds more devastation to an already terrible humanitarian situation,” he said on a visit to Paris for conversations with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Arab plan in danger

Israel and Western powers do not want Hamas to play any role in the enclave when the war is over. Israel promised to crush Hamas, but the Palestinian militant group remains the dominant force in Gaza.

Arab nations prepared a Plan for Peace and Reconstruction in Gaza after a proposal from US President Donald Trump to reset Palestinians and transform it into the Middle Eastern “riviera” triggered indignation in the region. However, the plan did not gain strength.
