At least 11 people were killed this Monday (2) in Israeli attacks in Lebanon, despite the ceasefire with Hezbollah, according to Lebanese authorities.
The country’s Health Ministry said nine people were killed and three injured in attacks in Talousa and Haris in the south, while the Israeli military said it struck dozens of Hezbollah targets across Lebanon.
Earlier on Monday, Lebanese authorities reported two deaths in Israeli strikes elsewhere in southern Lebanon, including a member of state security killed on duty.
The latest Israeli attacks came shortly after Hezbollah accused the country of violating a ceasefire agreement and firing missiles at an Israeli military position in the disputed Shebaa Farms area.
The armed group called the action a “defensive alert attack”. The Israeli military has not reported any casualties from the two Hezbollah missile launches, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised a “strong” response.
Hezbollah highlighted the attack was in retaliation for repeated Israeli violations of the truce.
Residents in Beirut also told Reuters they heard drones flying at low altitudes late in the night.
The exchange of hostilities puts the ceasefire in an increasingly fragile position less than a week after it came into effect.
The truce prohibits Israel from conducting offensive military operations in Lebanon, while also requiring Lebanon to prevent armed groups, including Hezbollah, from launching attacks against the neighboring country.
The speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally who negotiated the truce on behalf of Lebanon, highlighted that Beirut has recorded at least 54 ceasefire violations by Israel since Wednesday (27).
Understand conflicts in the Middle East
At the end of November, a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was approved. This comes after months of bombings by the Israeli Army in Lebanon.
The offensive caused destruction and forced more than a million people to leave their homes to escape the war. Furthermore, it left dozens of people dead in Lebanese territory.
Like Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad are radical groups financed by Iran, and therefore enemies of Israel.
The expectation is that the agreement will serve as the basis for a more lasting cessation of hostilities.
At the same time, the war continues in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli military is fighting Hamas and searching for hostages who were kidnapped more than a year ago during the radical group’s attack on Israeli territory on October 7, 2023. At the time, more than 1,200 people were killed and 250 kidnapped.
Since then, more than 43,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza during Israel’s offensive, which also destroyed virtually every building in the Palestinian territory.
On a third front of conflict, Israel and Iran exchanged attacks, which despite raising tension, did not evolve into an all-out war.
In addition, the Israeli Army has been carrying out bombings on Iranian-allied militia targets in Syria, Yemen and Iraq.
