The Israel Air Force killed at least 146 Palestinians in new attacks on Gaza on the last day and injured many others, local health officials said on Saturday (17).
The Israeli shots that took place since Thursday (15) have been one of the deadliest bombing phases since the end of the truce in March. The most recent attacks occurred after US President Donald Trump ending his trip to the Middle East on Friday (16) without any apparent progress towards a new ceasefire.
“Since midnight, we have received 58 martyrs, while a large number of victims remain under the rubble. The situation inside the hospital is catastrophic,” said Indonesian hospital director in northern Gaza, Marwan Al-Sultan.
Local health officials said 459 people were injured in Israeli attacks on the last day.
The Israeli army said on Saturday (17) that it was conducting comprehensive attacks and mobilizing troops as part of the preparations to expand operations in the Gaza Strip and obtain “operational control” in areas of the Palestinian enclave.
Gaza’s health system is almost inoperative, with hospitals repeatedly reached by the Israeli army during the 19 -month war and medical supplies ending as Israel intensifies blockade since March.
The climb, which includes increased armored forces along the border, is part of the early stages of ‘Operation Gideon Operation’, which, according to Israel, aims to defeat Hamas and recover its hostages.
An Israeli defense authority said earlier this month that the operation would not be launched before Trump concluded his visit to the Middle East.
“We are gradually increasing the forces; Hamas remains challenging,” the military said on Saturday (17).
Humanitarian aid blockade
United Nations experts warn that hunger approaches in Gaza after Israel blocked the sending of help to the track 76 days ago. UN Humanitarian Chief of Humanitarian Aid, Tom Fletcher, asked the Security Council this week if the country would act to “prevent genocide.”
On Friday (16), Trump acknowledged the growing hunger crisis in Gaza and the need for help deliveries as international pressure on Israel grows to resume ceasefire negotiations and end Gaza blockade.
A US -backed foundation aims to start distributing help to Gaza residents by the end of May, using private US security and logistics companies, but the UN said it will not work with the foundation because it is not impartial, neutral or independent.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on May 5 that Israel was planning an expanded and intensive offensive against Hamas, as his security office approved plans that could involve taking the entire Gaza Strip and help control.
On Friday (16), the Israeli army ordered residents of Gaza to travel to the south after heavy attacks in the city of Beit Lahia, in the north, and in the Jabalia refugee camp. Residents, however, said tanks were moving towards the city of Khan Youis in the south.
Israel’s declared goal in Gaza is the elimination of Hamas’s military and government capacities, which attacked Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and capturing about 250 hostages.
His military campaign devastated the small and crowded flirt, expelling almost all its 2 million inhabitants from their homes and killing more than 53,000 people, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
Palestinians, including Hamas, and President Mahmoud Abbas’s rival authority reject any displacement of people out of their lands.
