Israel’s attacks on the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as Unifil, are contrary to international humanitarian law and must stop immediately, Italy, the United Kingdom, France and Germany said on Monday (14).
In a joint statement, the four nations reaffirmed “the essential stabilizing role” played by Unifil in southern Lebanon, adding that Israel and other parties had to guarantee the safety of peacekeepers at all times.
The Unifil mission, which includes hundreds of European soldiers, said it has been repeatedly attacked by the Israeli military in recent days. Israel has asked the UN to withdraw troops from the area as it targets Hezbollah forces.
Brazil condemns Israeli action
Itamaraty also issued a statement, this Monday (14), condemning the Israeli invasion of the Unifil base.
“Deliberate attacks against members of peacekeeping missions and UN installations are absolutely unacceptable and constitute a serious violation of International Law, International Humanitarian Law and UN Security Council resolutions,” declared the Brazilian government.
“As a traditional participant in UN peacekeeping forces, including Unifil, whose maritime task force was led by Brazilian military personnel between 2011 and 2021, Brazil repudiates the systematic violations observed in recent days,” he added.
What is Unifil?
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was created by the UN Security Council following Israel’s first invasion of southern Lebanon in 1978.
Its objective was to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the country, restore international peace and security, and help the Lebanese government restore its effective authority in the area.
Unifil troops are tasked with monitoring border violations and keeping the so-called “Blue Line,” an area spanning 120 kilometers across southern Lebanon that includes Hezbollah strongholds, safe.
