Israel has “no intention” of harming United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL), said Foreign Minister Israel Katz.
Katz said Israel “attachs great importance to the activities of the (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) and has no intention of harming the organization or its personnel,” in a social media post.
The UN said the Israeli army fired on its peacekeepers, stormed a base, halted a critical logistical movement and injured more than a dozen of its soldiers in southern Lebanon in recent weeks.
The European Union’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, said on Monday (14) that attacking UN troops was “completely unacceptable”.
Katz alleged on Wednesday (16) that Hezbollah is using Unifil employees as human shields, “deliberately firing at IDF soldiers from locations close to Unifil positions in order to create friction.”
Israel “will continue to make every effort to avoid harming Unifil, all while coordinating with Unifil commanders and in accordance with international law,” Katz said.
