An Israeli delegation will travel to Moscow today for talks with officials, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s office said, amid a dispute over the activities in Russia of an agency that helps Jews immigrate to Israel.
Russia’s Justice Ministry is seeking the dissolution of the Russian branch of the non-profit Jewish Agency. Authorities claim the service has violated privacy laws and are expected to present more details to a Russian court on Thursday.
The case has raised concerns in Israel about creating a crisis with Russia, which is home to a large Jewish community while Moscow wields influence in Israel’s neighboring Syria.
“In coordination with the Russian authorities, the Israeli delegation will leave for Moscow this evening and will have meetings with the relevant parts of the Russian system,” Lapid’s office said in a statement.
About 600,000 Russians qualify to immigrate to Israel. Officials say there has been a surge in applications since the controversy over the Jerusalem-based Jewish Agency, the world’s largest Jewish nonprofit, emerged.
Lapid has said that closing the agency’s branch in Russia would be “serious, with consequences for (bilateral) relations.”
