Israeli hostage rescue operation leaves 236 dead, hospital says

The death toll in central Gaza rose to at least 236 following Israeli security forces’ operation on Saturday (8) to rescue four hostages from the Nuseirat refugee camp, according to hospital officials in the enclave.

The director of Al-Awda Hospital, Dr. Marwan Abu Nasser, told CNN that 142 bodies were counted at the medical facility late Saturday following Israel’s attack, which was accompanied by intense artillery fire and shelling.

Meanwhile, staff at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah counted 94 bodies in its medical facility, spokesman Khalil al-Dikran told CNN .

A CNN there is no way to verify the number of casualties reported by Palestinian officials in Gaza, due to the lack of international media access to the strip. Medical records in the war-torn enclave do not differentiate between dead civilians and militants.

Palestinian civilians described scenes of horror during the Israeli military operation, telling journalists that children had been “torn apart and scattered across the streets” by heavy shelling. Images from CNN of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital showed many people carrying injured children in their arms, covered in blood, and patients crowding the emergency room floor.

Israel’s military said Hamas, which took the hostages during the deadly Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, was holding the hostages in multi-story civilian buildings.
