Israeli police clashed with Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank as they dismantled an illegal settlement outpost on Wednesday morning (3), according to video of the police operation obtained by Reuters.
Video showed police bulldozers destroying makeshift structures at the outpost. The settlers sat on a small road to block police access, but officers moved them out of the way, the video showed.
There was no immediate comment from Israeli authorities on the operation, which took place at a location called Oz Zion.
Israel is under international pressure to halt the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, which Palestinians want as the core of a future independent state alongside Gaza.
The outpost, in a rural area, is illegal under Israeli and international law. In the past, police have cracked down on some illegal settlement activity in the West Bank, but Palestinian groups say that in many cases the police have failed to enforce the law, especially since the start of the Gaza war.
Last week, Israel’s hardline finance minister said the government would push for settlements in the West Bank and punitive measures against the Palestinian Authority in response to anti-Israel actions in the international community.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who leads a pro-settler party, said in a statement that the government supported his proposal. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office had no comment.
