Israeli military says it has hit around 75 targets in Lebanon

The Israeli military said it struck about 75 targets in Lebanon overnight.

“Overnight, the IAF, directed by IDF intelligence, struck approximately 75 terrorist targets belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the Beqaa area and southern Lebanon, including weapons storage facilities, ready-to-fire launchers, terrorists and terrorist infrastructure,” the military said in a statement.

The document added that the forces continued to “dismantle and degrade” Hezbollah’s infrastructure and capabilities.

Both southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley are Hezbollah strongholds and have borne the brunt of intensified Israeli airstrikes in recent days.

US calls for 21-day ceasefire

The United States and several of its allies have called for a 21-day ceasefire on the Israel-Lebanon border as they work to prevent escalation into a regional war and shake up stalled hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

The proposal, described by a senior US official as an “important breakthrough”, comes amid deadly fighting between Israel and Hezbollah that many fear could spiral into a wider conflict.

Hoping to avoid such an outcome, diplomats and leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly have spent the past 48 hours working hurriedly to secure a plan that would halt the fighting and give diplomacy room to take hold.

Israel and Hezbollah have not yet reached an agreement. But U.S. officials said both sides were “familiar” with the outlines of the proposal and expressed optimism that the time was right for it to be unveiled publicly.

President Joe Biden said the plan was endorsed by the United States, Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

“We’ve been able to generate significant support from Europe as well as from Arab nations,” Biden told reporters on Wednesday (25). “It’s important that this war not escalate.”
