Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said he would use his powers to prevent a “reckless” hostage and ceasefire deal.
The deaths of six hostages in Gaza have sparked mass protests in Israel, with demonstrators calling on the government to reach a deal to bring home about 100 hostages. Of those, 35 are believed to be dead.
Ben Gvir and his far-right allies are firmly opposed to this measure.
“We have power in the government. I can say that we use this power so that there are no rash agreements and so that there are no negotiations,” he told members of Gvura, a right-wing organization representing the families of Israeli soldiers killed during the war in the Gaza Strip.
The group marched through Tel Aviv on Monday (2) holding photos of their relatives, demanding that there be no truce.
“We will do our job so that (Israeli Prime Minister) Benjamin Netanyahu does not back down, so that there are no reckless deals, so that there are no negotiations with those who murdered, raped, massacred, burned. There is only one way to talk to Hamas: only between points of view (of arms),” he said.
Throughout the nearly 11 months of war, Ben Gvir – from the Jewish Power (Otzma Yehudit) party, which helps prop up Netanyahu’s governing coalition – has repeatedly opposed any ceasefire deal for hostages, threatening to topple the government if the military campaign in Gaza is ended.
