Members of the far-right Israeli party Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) announced their intention to resign from their government positions due to the ceasefire and hostage agreement with Hamas.
In a statement this Saturday (18), the party condemned the “reckless deal” which, according to them, would release “hundreds of murderers with the blood of men, women and children on their hands”, referring to the Palestinian prisoners who would be released from Israeli prisons in exchange for the hostages.
The party also argued that the agreement would amount to the “loss” of Israeli military gains in the war.
“This agreement constitutes a surrender to Hamas,” the party statement said.
The Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, the Minister of Development of the Periphery, Negev and Galilee, Yitzhak Wasserlauf, and the Minister of Heritage Amihai Eliyahu will present their letters of resignation this Sunday morning (19), according to the statement from the party.
The party’s departure from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s fragile government coalition will not be enough to topple the government.
This Saturday, Netanyahu said the agreement includes Israel’s right to return to war if Hamas does not comply with the agreement.
Ben Gvir later issued a statement that appeared to be a response to Netanyahu’s speech, saying: “Given that Hamas has not yet been defeated, it is clear that we must return to war — and therefore this must not be conditional.”
Understand the conflict in the Gaza Strip
Israel has carried out intense airstrikes in the Gaza Strip since 2023, after Hamas invaded the country and killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli counts. Furthermore, the radical group holds dozens of hostages.
Hamas does not recognize Israel as a state and claims Israeli territory for Palestine.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly promised to destroy Hamas’ military capabilities and recover people detained in Gaza.
In addition to the air offensive, the Israeli Army carries out land incursions into Palestinian territory. This caused much of Gaza’s population to be displaced.
The UN and several humanitarian institutions have warned of a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, with a lack of food, medicine and the spread of diseases.
