The International Court of Justice (ICJ) said on Friday (19), in a non-binding advisory opinion, that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegal and must end “as soon as possible”.
The United Nations (UN) tribunal, known as the World Court, also said that Israel must repair the damage caused by its occupation of Palestinian territories.
“The Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the regime associated with them, were established and are maintained in violation of international law,” World Court President Nawaf Salam said, reading the findings of a panel of 15 judges.
The case stems from a 2022 request by the UN General Assembly, which predates the current Israel-Hamas conflict.
The UN Assembly asked the court to assess the legal consequences of Israel’s “prolonged occupation, settlements and annexation” of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, and associated Israeli government policies.
