Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett paid a surprise visit to the United Arab Emirates today to meet with President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, according to an Israeli statement.
Bennett’s visit to Abu Dhabi – the third in recent months – had not been announced before.
According to the statement, the two leaders, whose countries established relations two years ago, will discuss “various regional issues”, but did not provide details.
“Today, together, we will take to the next level this special bond that has been developed between our countries – for the development and security of both peoples,” said Bennett, who met with Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Mohammed bin Zayed succeeds his half-brother, who died last month, Khalifa bin Sajed al-Nahyan.
In 2020, the UAE and Bahrain became the first two Gulf states to sign an agreement on diplomatic relations with Israel.
Mohammed bin Zayed had also pushed for rapprochement between the two countries.
Until then, only two Arab countries, Egypt and Jordan, maintained diplomatic relations with Israel.
