The Israeli army stated that it fired shots close to a diplomatic delegation that, according to them, had left the route authorized in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday (21).
Diplomatic sources stated that European diplomats were part of the delegation in the city of Jenin, West Bank.
The army stated that “the delegation deviated from the approved route and entered an area where he was not allowed to be,” adding that the soldiers fired “warning shots to push them away.”
There were no injuries or damage, the army said.
European Union’s head of foreign policy, Kaja Kallas, said she learned of the incident during a visit of diplomats organized by the Palestinian Authority.
“We definitely ask Israel to investigate this incident and also responsible for those who are responsible for this and any threats to the lives of diplomats,” she said.
Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that a Spaniard was among the group of diplomats, but was not injured.
“We are in contact with other countries affected to coordinate a joint response to what happened, which we vehemently condemn,” he said in a statement.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani, said in the X (former Twitter) that the ambassador of Israel in Rome would be summoned to explain the situation.
Images from Israeli television showed individuals running to vehicles with diplomatic signs while gunfire were heard at a distance.
The Foreign Ministry of Palestinian Authority said that “the delegation was conducting an official mission to observe and evaluate the humanitarian situation and document continuous violations perpetuated by Israel.” The ministry classified the Israeli Army actions as a violation of international law.
The Israeli army has killed dozens of Palestinians and destroyed many houses in the West Bank since starting an operation in January in the city of Jenin to eradicate militants.
