Israeli strikes in southern Syria

The Israeli army announced late last night that it had carried out strikes in an area of southern Syria, which is considered by the Jewish state to be the “second front” of operations against the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

“Recently, during a military operation in the Golan Heights, soldiers located suspects near a military post and opened fire on them. The suspects then fled to Syrian territory,” the staff said in a short message.

Israel captured in 1967 and then annexed part of the Syrian Golan Heights, a strategic area also adjacent to Lebanon. Israeli soldiers are constantly patrolling the area.

According to the official Syrian news agency SANA, Israeli helicopters also opened fire on forests near the Syrian village of Al Khouriya, in the Quneitra region, on the border with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based non-governmental organization, also spoke of the “strong presence” of Israeli helicopters in the area.

No source spoke of casualties.

The Israeli military – which has stepped up airstrikes in recent years against pro-Iranian elements in Syria – sees the area as a “second front” of operations against Hezbollah, a Lebanese group based in Tehran with which it was involved in 2006.

The Israeli authorities often warn that they will not allow Syria to become the spearhead of the forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a sworn enemy of the Jewish state.

On Tuesday, the Israeli army announced that it had shot down a small UAV, which he said belonged to Hezbollah, in the area of the Lebanese-Israeli border, which is highly militarized.
