Israelis protest against Netanyahu after resumption of war

Protesters gathered outside the Israeli parliament, the Knesset in Jerusalem to protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a day after resuming the war in Gaza, breaking the two-month ceasefire with Hamas.

On Highway 1 – the main road that connects Tel Aviv to Jerusalem – some protesters held a track with the words: “The future of the coalition or the future of Israel.”

The track alludes to how, over almost 18 months of war and fragile ceasefire, Netanyahu was accused of prioritizing the solidity of his governmental coalition over the security of his country, as well as the lives of Israeli and Palestinians hostages in Gaza.

These accusations were made with new anger after Israel bombed Gaza at night until Tuesday (18) and killed more than 400 people, according to the Ministry of Health of Gaza, on one of the deadliest days of the war.

For Netanyahu, the resumption of war helped reinforce his unstable coalition amid his ongoing corruption trial and before an important vote on Israel’s budget. But for many Israelis, the renewed struggle aroused feelings of despair – and anger at the government. And for the Palestinians, it means the end of the relief that lasted only two months.

Protesting alongside thousands of people outside the Knesset, Elias Shraga, president of the quality government movement in Israel, a legal body, said the Netanyahu war in Gaza was being locked to keep him in power.

“Netanyahu wanted to escape justice. This is the only reason why we are facing the coup and this bloody war. CNN .

Netanyahu had been scheduled to witness in his corruption trial on Tuesday (18), but the hearing was canceled due to the resumption of military activities in Gaza, a few hours before he went to court. The Prime Minister denies any irregularity.

“One reason he wanted to escape justice is because he wants to keep his coalition and is ready to sacrifice his people, that’s it. It’s very simple,” said Shraga, adding that the resumption of combat showed once again that Netanyahu “doesn’t care about the hostages” in Gaza that should be released under the ceasefire agreement.

“We are sacrificing our fellow men at this time, [enquanto] our [primeiro-ministro] It sells your soul, ”said Shraga.

Netanyahu argued that military pressure on Hamas is necessary to return the hostages.

“Taking our democracy”

Opposition leader Yair Lapid joined Wednesday’s demonstration, which, according to him, aims to “ensure that the government understands that it cannot do what it wants.”

Using a yellow tape to signal your support to the hostages held in Gaza, Lapid told CNN That protesters are “trying to tell people of the world that Israel will not be silent when they are taking our democracy.”

Already, the resumption of the fights seems to have returned to Netanyahu the support of Itamar Ben-Gvir, the far-right minister who left the government in protest against the January ceasefire agreement. On Tuesday (18), shortly after Gaza’s new bombing, his Jewish Power Party announced that he would join the Netanyahu coalition.

Yuval Yairi, an artist from Jerusalem and former director of an art school, told the CNN Which believes the fighting was restarted for political reasons – saying Netanyahu needed his right -wing allies before the budget final on March 31 – and said the war corrodes Israel’s democracy.

“I am very concerned about the possibility of a civil war. This nation is divided. Sometimes it seems that there is no way out. People no longer believe in democracy. They no longer believe in the lives we had first of all start. You see the division: religion on the one hand, secularism on the other.

However, others outside the Knesset were showing support to Netanyahu. Standing on the tent of the “Heroism and Hope Forum”, a group that supports continuous military action in Gaza, Margalit Yachad, an ambulance driver, said he believes Netanyahu is acting in the best interest in the country.

“I don’t know why there is so much hatred on him or the right. CNN .
