Israel’s air strikes kill at least 100 in Gaza amid negotiations

Israeli air strikes killed at least 100 Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip at night, local health officials reported on Sunday, while mediators conducted a new round of ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

There were no immediate comments from the Israeli Army, which has expanded its attacks on the enclave and killed hundreds of people since Thursday (15), in preparation for a new terrestrial offensive to achieve “operational control” in parts of Gaza.

“We have at least 100 martyrs since the night before. Whole families have been deleted from the Civil Registry by Israeli bombardment,” Khalil Al-Deqran, spokesman for the Ministry of Health of Gaza, told Reuters by telephone.

Israel has blocked the entry of medical, food and fuel supplies in Gaza since early March to try to press Hamas to release Israeli hostages and approved plans that may involve taking the entire Gaza Strip and the control of humanitarian aid.

Hamas states that he will only free the hostages in exchange for an Israeli ceasefire.

Egypt and Qatar mediators, supported by the United States, began a new round of indirect ceasefire negotiations between the two parts on Saturday (17), but sources near the negotiations told Reuters that there was no advances.

The British Sky News and BBC reported at night that Hamas had proposed the release of about half of their Israeli hostages in exchange for a two-month ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners kept by Israel.

Contacted by Reuters, a Hamas representative said, “Israel’s position remains unchanged: they want the liberation of their prisoners, without the commitment to end the war.”

Possibly further complicating the negotiations of ceasefire, reports in the Israeli media and Arabic said that Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar may have been killed.

Hamas has not confirmed or denied the news. The Ministry of Defense of Israel did not commented immediately.

In Israel, Einav Zangauker, mother of Hamas hostage, Matan Zangauker, said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to end the war in exchange for the remaining hosts for Hamas, due to his political interests.

“The Israeli government keeps insisting on partial agreements. They are deliberately plaguing us. They bring our children back soon! All 58,” Zangauker said in a post on the X X Platform.

Flame tents

One of Israel’s night attacks hit a tent camp that housed displaced families in Khan Youis in southern Gaza, killing women and children, injuring tens and burning several tents.

Hamas described the attack as a “new brutal crime” and blamed the US government for climbing.

Among the dozens of dead at the beginning of Sunday were five journalists, some with their families.

Zakaria al-Sinwar, brother of Hamas leader, and three of his children were killed in an Israeli air strike against their tent in downtown Gaza, doctors said. He was a history professor at a Gaza University.

Both men are brothers of former Hamas Chief Yehya al-Sinwar, killed by Israel last October.

Gaza’s health system is practically inoperative due to repeated Israeli bombing and attacks on hospitals. The blockade to provide humanitarian aid aggravated the difficulties and aggravated widespread hunger, by which Israel blames Hamas.

“Hospitals are overloaded with a growing number of victims, many of them children,” Deqran said.

Later on Sunday, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported that the Indonesian hospital, one of the largest medical facilities partially operating in northern Gaza, had stopped working due to close and near Israeli shots.

The Israeli army did not commented immediately.

Shifa Hospital employees, the largest of Gaza, asked the population to give blood due to the large number of victims. Hospital staff said they received 40 dead and dozens injured at night due to continuous Israeli attacks.

The Palestinian Civil Emergency Service reported that 75% of its ambulances stopped operating due to fuel scarcity amid the Israeli import ban. He warned that unless the fuel is released within 72 hours, all vehicles can stop.

The declared goal of Israel in Gaza is the elimination of Hamas’s military and government capabilities, which attacked Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and doing about 250 hostages.

The Israeli military campaign devastated the enclave, expelling almost all residents of their homes and killing more than 53,000 people, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
