Israel’s attack should not be magnified or minimized, says Iran’s supreme leader

Israel’s air strikes on Iran must not be expanded or minimized, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday (27).

While Israel wants to amplify the impacts of its actions against Iran, Khamenei said it would also not be right for Iran to dismiss the attacks as insignificant.

“They are making a miscalculation on Iran,” the leader said in comments posted on his website.

“They have still failed to properly understand the power, capability, ingenuity and determination of the Iranian people. We need to make them understand these things.”

Khamenei said those who believe Iran should avoid producing weapons to avoid provoking adverse reactions are mistaken. Keeping a country weak does not maintain its security, he declared.

The Iranian leader also condemned Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, as well as the international community for enabling it.

“War operates within a framework of rules, laws and limitations. These limitations cannot simply be disregarded during a war. However, the criminal gang that rules the occupied lands has trampled all limits and rules,” he said.

Both Iranian and Israeli officials appeared deliberate Saturday in their first statements about Israel’s retaliatory response to Tehran’s massive missile attack earlier this month.

Israel’s public stance immediately after the attacks was relatively moderate. This was intentional, said a source familiar with the Israeli government’s thinking, aimed at giving Iran the opportunity to minimize attacks and avoid further escalation.

Iran’s government appeared to seize this opportunity, claiming that the strikes caused only limited damage to military sites, even as it acknowledged that four Iranian soldiers were killed.
