Israel’s military strategy against Hezbollah is being shaped by lessons learned from the 2006 war, according to Harvard researcher and professor of International Relations at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) Vitelio Brustolin.
In an interview with WW the expert detailed the possible political objectives and military tactics that Israel could adopt in the current conflict.
According to Brustolin, Israeli intelligence has been struggling to redeem itself following the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7.
“Israel learned from the 2006 incursion,” the researcher said, indicating that Israeli forces may be planning a more assertive approach this time around.
Israel’s political goals
The expert identified three main political objectives for Israel in this conflict:
- Maintenance of power for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who depends on the support of far-right ministers to remain in office.
- Drastic reduction in Hezbollah’s ability to target Israel, considering that the group has between 100,000 and 150,000 rockets and missiles.
- Provocation of a response from Iran, which has promised revenge against Israel but has yet to act, possibly due to the US military presence in the region.
Military strategies under consideration
Brustolin outlined three strategies Israel can adopt to achieve its goals:
- The explosion of electronic devices in enemy territory.
- Aerial bombings on specific and mapped points in southern Lebanon.
- A possible ground invasion up to the Litani River, aimed at enforcing UN resolution 1701, which prohibits Hezbollah from deploying offensive weapons south of that river.
The professor stressed that the final strategy will depend on the political objectives defined by the Israeli government.
The situation remains tense, with more than 60,000 Israelis displaced from the north of the country awaiting developments to return to their homes.
