Israel’s UN envoy says Iran ‘will feel the consequences of its actions’

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, condemned Iran’s “unprecedented attack on Israel” on Tuesday (1st), in a statement to reporters at the organization’s headquarters.

“Let me be very clear. We will defend our people. We will act. Iran will soon feel the consequences of its actions. The answer will be painful,” he said.

Danon also said he called for an emergency session of the Security Council as soon as possible.

“This is disappointing. We have no desire for war or escalation, but we cannot stand by when our civilians are being attacked in this way. And as I said before, Iran used to send representatives. But now, when they send almost 200 ballistic missiles, this is something that I don’t think any other nation in the world will ignore,” said the Israeli ambassador.

Iran’s ballistic missile attack marks a sharp escalation of tensions in the region, despite months of intense negotiations by Joe Biden’s US administration and regular promises that a ceasefire to end the conflict in Gaza was imminent.

Iran has fired a wave of missiles at Israel in retaliation for Israel’s air and ground campaign against Tehran’s Hezbollah allies in Lebanon, and Israel has promised a “painful response” against its foe.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards promised that if Israel fought back, Tehran’s response would be “more crushing and ruinous.”

Israel said it intercepted more than 180 missiles launched from Iran.
