Israel's war cabinet ends meeting on response to Iran attacks

A meeting between Israeli war cabinet officials on a possible response to Iran's retaliatory strikes has concluded, an Israeli official told Reuters. CNN. The source did not provide details about the negotiations.

The discussion, which began at 12:30 p.m. local time, was the fifth series of talks held by the war cabinet since the weekend, when Iran launched a barrage of missiles in retaliation for an alleged Israeli attack on an Iranian diplomatic building in Damascus, Syria.

Iran's unprecedented weekend attack was the first time Iran has fired directly at Israel from its territory, as regional tensions rise over Israel's military offensive in Gaza.

Regional leaders and Israel's allies have called for restraint as Israel plans its response, in a high-stakes effort to minimize a broader escalation of Israel's military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Israel must balance international pressure to show restraint on the one hand while seeking an adequate response to the offensive.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now has to weigh his right-wing coalition's call for a strong reaction against the risk of greater international isolation for Israel, through the expansion of the war without international support.
