It is an almost exclusively female decline in employment recorded in December 2020. Istat data had marked a recovery between July and November. It is mainly women who are losing their jobs: workers have dropped by 101,000, of which 99,000 are women.
The female employment rate in December it fell by 0.5 points and that of inactivity increased by 0.4%.
On the other hand, male employment is stable and inactivity is down slightly, minus 0.1.

They are affected all age groups except those over 50, which are instead growing. As for the categories, it affects employees, but the most affected are self-employed workers: 79,000 jobs in December alone compared to November.
The decline is not limited to the previous month. Compared to 2019 there are 444 thousand fewer workers and the inactive have grown by 482 thousand units. And women are still the majority: 312,000 have lost their jobs. It happens because they are mostly employed in sectors affected by the pandemic such as services (emblematic case that of industrial laundries stopped due to the closure of restaurants and hotels, but it applies to the entire tourism and catering sector). It also happens because they are more appropriately employed in precarious jobs.
