Istat, Leonardo and Sofia are the most common names for newborns

The favorite names of Italian parents for their children, in 2021, were Leonard and Sophia. This was reported by the Istat survey on the report «Birth rate and fertility of the resident population – Year 2021». For males, Alessandro is in second place, followed by Tommaso and Francesco. For females, the most popular names after Sofia are Aurora, Giulia and Ginevra.

Leonardo has been on the podium since 2018while Alessandro gains one position compared to 2020. Tommaso climbs to third place, while Francesco drops to fourth. Sofia was also already at the top of the standingswhile Aurora climbs by one place and Giulia goes down by one, while Geneva remains stable in fourth place.

While there are over 26,000 different names for boys and over 25,000 for girls, 44% of all names chosen for boys and almost 38% of those chosen for girls are in the top 30 in order of frequency.

Leonardo is in first place in all the central-northern regions (except in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, where the name Noah takes first place). In particular, he was chosen in Abruzzo, Sardinia and, for the first time, also in Sicily, undermining Giuseppe’s historic primacy. Francesco remains stable in first place only in Puglia and Calabria, like Antonio in Campania and Basilicata. In Molise, on the other hand, Lorenzo is at the top of the standings.

For girls, Sofia is in first place in all the central-northern regions (except in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, where it is overtaken by Emma, ​​and in Liguria and Umbria where Aurora excels) and in Abruzzo, Basilicata and Calabria. Giulia remains the preferred name in Molise, Puglia and Sicily. Aurora is on the top step of the podium in Campania and Sardinia.
